I’m trying to elminate dairy because of the growth hormones in cows milk.
Note to posters suggesting ‘hormone free cows milk’: Studies are showing that even if you don’t add extra growth hormones, the cows milk has enough natural bovine growth hormone for a calf to double it’s size in a few days, which is a lot of growth hormone! Still, it’s less than if it were added, but not good if you’re sensitive to it — trying to stay cancer free or lose weight.

I’ve made this cake twice now for a friend who has an egg allergy. The batter is very thick like cookie dough, which the recipe says it will be. The recipe is for a regular egg cake, and I’ve used applesauce the first time to substitute and this time used banana and baking powder. It rose better this time, but is just as greasy if not more greasy/oily in texture. I use baking cook spray in a glass pan to make the cake, and when its done cooking, it’s almost boiling because all the extra liquid in the cake! It seems like a ton of butter is falling to the bottom of the cake and it’s sitting in a pool of liquid, so I have to cut it and take it out and sit it in the fridge on paper towels just to make it edible.

Where’s the mistake here?? Should I cut back on the amount of butter I use when I substitute the egg?? I’m not a very experienced baker, especially in vegan/eggless baking.. What could cause the cake to be so greasy??

can i use 2% milk? is it just soymilk cuz it’s vegan?

I’m vegan but I used to LOVE to bake. However, now I refuse to because I refuse to use eggs. When I told my friend, she said that she heard somewhere that half a banana can be used to substitute one egg while baking. Is this true? If not, are there any egg substitutes?

Are there any milk substitutes aside from soymilk and almond milk?

My mom is trying to avoid these products as most of them are related to corn and/or have ingredients she cannot consume without getting sick (carrageen). Any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you! She also trying to become vegetarian/vegan…? Links would be appreciated, too!
Organic milk doesn’t mean the animals are treated any better does it?
The almond milk contains carrageen which makes her sick…it’s not related to corn, you’re right.

I eat all organic. Everything i eat is organic and I don’t eat real butter I eat a vegan substitute. I eat a lot of veggies cause my mom has tuberculous and we eat pretty well. It has been years since I’ve had a burger. I rarely eat meat eat a lot of fish. We eat broccoli and kale and tons of spinach. However I do have occasional desserts like ice cream and snacks like popcorn but organic low sodium and such. I haven’t actually gone and added exact calories but after a basic addition I know I eat a little less than 1200 calories a day. Is this a healthy diet? I am a skinny fat person- I’m skinny with deposits of fat around my abdominals. What do I need to do to combat this fat

My family and I are “ovo-lacto” vegetarians and are thinking about making the transition to a vegan lifestyle. Our only problem is finding only ORGANIC cheese substitutes. We can live without the occasional egg, but we really like cheese and use it in a few dishes. The organic cheese we currently buy is from Trader Joe’s or from Organic Valley.

I know Road’s End Organics has something called Chreeze, which is vegan. Are there any other organic cheese substitutes??

How can I make an edible plain vegan cake?

I keep trying to make a plain white vanilla vegan cake – I use the recipe my mom has always used successfully for non-vegan cakes and substitute everything with its vegan equivalent (and skip the eggs) : flour, soy milk, brown sugar, minarine, vanilla extract – and it turns out fine taste-wise and texture-wise in the beginning, and then in the oven it looks fine as it starts rising (it looks as if it is becoming fluffy) but then when I take it out and it cools off i bit it somewhat becomes more flat. And then when I cut it, the inner bit is all stuck together and almost unbaked, the whole think having sunk in somehow. Is it because of the soy milk instead of the milk? because of minarine instead of butter? or because of the lack of eggs? or all together? Almost all the recipes of vegan cakes I have found include oil instead of minarine/butter, water instead of milk and baking soda or vinegar and I am very reluctant to make such a cake because it might taste horrible (with no milk/soy milk and no minarine/butter in it). Can anyone help me with a recipe that works, is tasty and one that DOES not turn out flat and almost uncooked in the middle???

Substitute for cow’s milk for a baby?

My baby is going to be one soon, and off formula (formula feeding was not by choice). I know the standard is to give him cow milk, but we’ve changed our diets, and are phasing out meat, dairy, etc

I’m just wondering WHAT I can give him in place of cow milk? Is soy OK for a toddler? And is it really necessary for him to have milk in a bottle or sippy? He has started eating our food and baby food, does he really need 5 bottles full of milk every day? Can a baby have too much soy? Would rice milk be as good? And why do Dr.’s say to give them so much milk?

I’d appreciate BOTH sides of the argument here, has anyone ever had problems from giving a baby NO milk? Or, what did you use if your vegetarian/vegan/pescotarian?

Ok, I am so done with yahoo answeres, people DON’T READ. Soon to be off formula, so I don’t need formula suggetions. I asked about soy, not breast milk (did you see the ‘not by choice’ comment???) and yes, common sense is to ask a Dr, but I’d like to get some ideas first. Thanks for telling me to call my Dr. Drs do not know everything, mine also says to eat meat at least once a day, which I don’t agree with.

Has anyone out there actually fed a vegetarian child? What did you use other than cow milk?
