Some people are just curious. As a non vegetarian I would be curious as to what was in the "fake" meat and what it tastes like.

I am sure some people are just trying to be jerks but dont assume everyone is : )

Kids like to pick on each other, fight or harass over ANYTHING. I would expect you would already know this by now.
Think back a bit on all the things people make fun of other people for. Your vegetarian food choices are healthy and reasonable and good for the planet and society. Deep down everyone knows it.
When people make fun of each other they are really just testing the waters to see if they can get to you. It's definitely rude and immature, but as far as teasing, harassing, and judging go, this is pretty mild.
If this is what people choose to freak out over then laugh it off with confidence. They are being silly and everyone knows it.

Eat a large variety of protein from pulses, legumes, dry beans and peas, wholegrain and nuts, etc. These contain varieties of amino acids and some lack what those have. So eating variety will help you combine all the amino acids in your body. Also, you may be lacking vitamin B12 found only in animal products. Try fortified cereals or take supplements. Young girls and women need a lot of iron as they need lot of red blood cells which they lose monthly. So eat iron-enriched foods in accompaniment with foods rich in vitamin C, which facilitates absorption of iron from plant-based foods. Have some sunlight on your skin in the morning for vitamin D, which is found only in fish and milk. However avoid sunburns which can cause skin cancer. Omega 3 is another nutrient that vegans lack as it is found in large amounts in fish, which they don't eat. So eat a spoonful of ground flaxseed everyday. And you were asking a good egg substitute. Did you know that one spoonful of ground flaxseed replaces one whole egg when baking. Try it. It can make the baked food a bit gummy however, but works quite well. As for milk, try putting some almonds in boiling water and when the outer layer starts getting separated from the nuts, remove them completely and grind the white kernels as thinly as possible and serve just like milk. In fact, almonds have more calcium than any other nut — 70 milligrams (mg) in 23 almonds. Good source of protein, magnesium and vitamin E too.

Remember that little saying your parents used to tell you that really pissed you off to hear every time? Knowing that it wasn't helping the situation? Well, if you can't remember, I'll refresh your memory:

Life. Isn't. Fair.

I understand completely what you're saying but there is absolutely no solution to this problem other than tolerance. Most meat-eaters are ignorant of the details of a vegetarian diet, therefore ask obnoxious questions such as those listed.

Maybe meat-eaters get to say what they want because there are more of them. More people to back THEM up and support THEM, while you're left, standing there, explaining your lifestyle to them, although deep down, 90% of them could care less.

I agree 100% on the statement that meat smells disgusting, and I believe veggie burgers are far better than a decomposing animal carcass between two pieces of bread. But I suppose the concept of making a "patty" from something other than Bessie's backside is such an insane idea to them, that they get defensive and attempt to single you out from the community by exclaiming ridiculous statements about the "absurdity" of a veggie burger.

I too am angered at the fact that if I say something about how gross a rotting-flesh-burger is to me, I am slandered because of MY diet. I actually had an extremely obese person tell me that MY diet is "unhealthy," and that his diet, which includes meat, IS healthy. Healthy, maybe for a small elephant!

In any case, tolerance is the only answer I can offer. Best of luck to you, and God bless.

First of all, congrats! It's a hard step to make when you consider what a change it means for you and those around you... but a good one. I've been vegan for about 7 years, and I live in a rural area of Northern Canada so I know that it can be difficult at times getting things you need, but it's worth it. I don't regret it at all. For egg replacers (in baking mostly) I use 'Ener-G' (I think it's called) - it's pretty easy to get and works well. Other than that you can use ground flax seeds, various flours, bread crumbs, starches (cornstarch, potato starch) to add rise or thickening to dishes, depending on what you need. I really recommend getting a couple vegan cookbooks or reference guides 'cause they'll tell you heaps more about replacements/alternatives.
As far as milk goes, I like soy milk (SO GOOD in particular), but there a few brands out there now; I'm not too fond of rice milk, but only because it's a bit too sweet for me. Try a few different kinds, a few different brands, to find what you like.
When I became vegan I reasoned that if I needed supplements to do it, it wouldn't be sustainable - so I don't take any - and I'm perfectlly healthy. But I do watch what I eat fairly closely. I'm not anal about it, but I keep an eye on protein, carbs, veggies, fruit, yadda yadda.... and it seems to be working. Of course nutrition is a personal thing - you've gotta find what works for you. If you're craving the meat taste - try Yves Cuisine --> hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.... they're pretty good.
The best tip I can give you though is be patient... with yourself and others, 'cause even if you're ready for it, those around you may not be. They may not understand why you're choosing veganism (it looks very 'restrictive' to others) and if you can't compasionately (and comfortably) explain it, they won't get it.
I wish you luck and many years of animal-friendly living!

I use a pound of Light Life ground. You could use any kind of ground though like Boca or Morningstar Farms. Then I prepare the taco meat as I normally would. The only difference is the smart ground. They even have smart ground that is already seasoned like taco meat.

Then in place of the normal cheese you can use tiny chunks of soy cheese. They even sell cruelty free sour cream. Tofutti makes it and I cannot tell the difference between that and regular sour cream.

Corn starch is the best thing you can use as a thickener. It has no taste and it's super cheap.

Soy milk works really well in just about any recipe that requires milk. Silk brand, in my opinion, is best because it has a lot of vitamins and nutritients most people think can only be found in meat such as vitamin B12, riboflavin, etc.

As for things that tate like meat that aren't, try just using tofu and different spices with it to get a almost meat-like flavor. Amy's Kitchen veggie burgers are really good to and not heavily processed. Ener-G is a good egg replacer in recipes. You can find it in almost all health food stores, even local grocery stores if you just look around.

As for supplements, they're never necessary if you eat a well balanced diet and don't have a pre-existing medical condition. If you really feel you need one though, make sure you get one labeled vegetarian. It might also be wise to see your physician to get a blood test to determine if you're really missing out on something if you're that worried about it.
