What’s a good main course for vegan holiday meal?

November 28, 2008 by admin · 6 Comments

My daughter has decided to go vegan (still eats dairy) and I’d like to have something on the table at Christmas that would be a “main” dish as opposed to her just eating the sides that come along with the roast.
Any of you nice people have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the suggestions, and “Fille de Salade” get laid, you obviously need it.

Mother & I in headlock over son’s birthday/thanksgiving, we’re vegan, she’s not?

November 27, 2008 by admin · 14 Comments

My mother knows my eating preferences include no animal products. Just as I know my mother’s eating preferences include keeping Kosher…

Now, my mother has offered to make my son a cake for his 1st birthday, but is insisting on making it with eggs/dairy (we have family history of milk on my son’s fathers side, son hasn’t any allergies yet, but I don’t want to chance it).

She also wants to invite us for Thanksgiving, and prepare a spread but now is reconsidering even inviting us because she doesn’t want to “offend our sensitivities”. She has not offered to let me cook or bring food…

Basically she’s giving an all-or-nothing: We come over, we eat what she prepares. Or we don’t come over and I have that hanging over my head forever.

I would like to go there, with a compromise:
She lets me bring some Thanksgiving dishes to share, she lets me bring vegan ice cream (tofuttie or whatever), and she gets to make the cake & thanksgiving.

Does this sound resonable? (more)
I must add that she is VERY volitile over this situation so “light stepping” would be ideal.

I don’t want to offend her, however I feel she has disrespected my family’s beliefs by trivializing the importance of our dietary choices.

I would never offer to cook for her and prepare her an un-Kosher meal, it would never cross my mind.
The only communication we’ve had regarding thanksgiving was one very terse email from her, where she first brought up the idea “I would like to invite you to a Thanksgiving and prepare a meal for you, but I can’t ask you to a meal that goes against your sensitivities”

and that is all. No hey, how are we going to work through this, hey can you bring some food, hey will you eat ___? just “I wanted to invite you but now I can’t because I don’t want to offend you”

Hmmm…

and yes there have been a time that I have sent a baked potatoe back at a STEAKHOUSE she invited me to dinner, because the potatoe had butter… I’ve seen my dad send back a huge plate of nachos TWICE because it had onions… so I don’t think I’m unreasonable at all. Oh and when we’re eating out, I do ask “is there dairy/eggs in ___” but I don’t roll my eyes or groan or any of that. I understand they eat meat, I don’t… I try to be as adult as possible about it.
Wow the last answer struck a chord. You have insight to her side that for some reason I had ignored. I was looking at it more matter-of-factly, “ok i can’t eat that b/c I just… can’t! don’t want to! she can’t make me!”

For my mother food was more, and by refusing her food I may have essentially “refused her love”. And as others have said “it sounds like more than the food” TRUE. There’s alot of old hurt in both of us, moreso her as I’ve pretty much closed up & moved on. Hopefully we’ll be able to resolve this.

I sent her a long heartfelt email.

I told her to make the cake, however she sees fit. I also told her I can help with thanksgiving preparations/bring food/help in the kitchen like old times.

i told her I don’t want my diet to interfere with our relationship, but that I do eat this way for a reason and would appreciate her understanding.

we’ll see how she replies.

Thank you all for your very sincere answers. You all helped me (?) diffuse a tense situation.

How can a vegan slip by undetected at a carnivore family thanksgiving dinner?

November 27, 2008 by admin · 10 Comments

Every year I go to my family’s thanksgiving dinner. Up until this year I have been a vegetarian. Not eating the turkey was never really a big deal because I could eat all of the other dishes. This year, I am vegan and won’t be able to eat a single dish at the table because they all will contain milk, butter, cream, egg or meat! How can I get away with an empty plate? I don’t want to cause a big deal because my family won’t understand my decision and it will get dramatic. Any suggestions as to how I can manage this year would be helpful. Or maybe a suggestion of a dish I could bring to share with meat eaters that is vegan??

Will any of you veggie heads slip up on Thanksgiving?

November 24, 2008 by admin · 19 Comments

Maybe grab a little pinch of the turkey or ham when nobody is looking.

What would a vegan Thanksgiving meal consist of anyway?

Just curious, don’t get all defensive or anything.

keep in mind people that have a problem with compassionate cooks, you CAN get protein and iron AND vitamins from other food excluding animal flesh.

As a recent vegan, is it Ok to just smell the turkey this Thanksgiving?

November 22, 2008 by admin · 18 Comments

I’m not going to eat it. But I understand the the olfactory glands are triggered by the atomimized remains of a dead animal. A turkey in this case. Since that is the case, aren’t I actually consuming the charred remains of a living animal through my nose?

Why would you be a vegan and not ever participate in protest?

November 21, 2008 by admin · 3 Comments

Why would someone be a vegan, but not ever participate in a protest? It seems to me, that if you were a true vegan, you would be out there picketing, etc.. I am a member of a group that pickets in front of McDonalds at least once a month. I spend hours making up all the signs for our group.

The reason I ask is because I have invited several so called “vegans” to join us and they never join us. I thought most people become vegans because they care, but obviously some become vegan for vanity reasons.
