What baked dessert is easiest to make (good) vegan, and which is the hardest?

Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by Brahbrah: What baked dessert is easiest to make (good) vegan, and which is the hardest?
For me, the easiest have been coconut custard pie and cupcakes, and the hardest has been brownies. I’m just curious as to what you think.
Hash lovers, weed does not make the brownies more vegan or less vegan. You can use coconut oil for the pot instead of butter. For any brownies, the primary problem is eggs. Additions such as berries, nuts, pot butter/oil, don’t change this problem.
Squiggle, don’t give up on vegan muffins. They are really not hard. You can try this recipe:
http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=953874
It’s from the Veganomicon. Otherwise, anything Isa Chandra Moskowitz/PPK has to offer is probably good. i’ve never made a bad muffin. Sometimes I just buy the Trader Joe’s cornbread mix, use Ener-G instead of eggs, and stir in cranberries or blueberries. The mix is too sweet to be what any Southerner would call “cornbread,” so I just make it into muffins.

Depending on the circumstance – in baking muffins, or quickloafs like banana bread – she uses either applesauce or bananas
for cookies she says there’s this special vegan egg replacer powder.
There’s a vegan cooking website that has a cookie section:

and there’s a vegan date square / bars recipe & blueberry rhubarb crisp at this site:

What is an appropriate gift to give at the end of a stage? (For a Vegan)?

Question by AlexaP: What is an appropriate gift to give at the end of a stage? (For a Vegan)?
Hi,
I will soon be finishing a stage I did at a physio/occupational therapist clinic. I know I should give a gift, I was just wondering what was appropriate. I don’t want to give an overly sentimental gift (after all, I was just observing) but I feel like just getting food might be a bit insincere. Plus, one of the two specific ladies I worked with is a vegan. I also did not really work with everyone at the clinic, but I feel like I should bring a little something for everyone. I was thinking about getting mini cupcakes. Would it be appropriate to get the two ladies something extra? Any suggestions?
Thanks

how about some hand cleasers by Bath & Body or Victoria’s Secret lotions, they smell wonderful and they’re affordable.

Why does everyone try to sabotage my vegan diet?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by Lauren P: Why does everyone try to sabotage my vegan diet?
I am a brand new vegan (this is my second week!) I am really happy about my decision and I have found that I actually go to bed at night feeling like I made a positive change. I am a lifetime animal lover and am really disgusted by the conditions in factory farms. It feels right for me.
My boyfriend is supportive, as is my family, but my co-workers and some friends really want me to fail. I literally just had cupcakes put right on my desk and was told that I am going to die young without animal proteins. What is that? Why do they care what I eat? Why do they want me to fail? I don’t care what they eat!! I am really a nice person, but felt like I had to restrain myself from bopping them on the head.

How can I ease into a vegan lifestyle?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by aflei: How can I ease into a vegan lifestyle?
I’ve been a vegetarian for about 6 years and I’ve recently joined a Vegan/Vegetarian group and have heard so much about being vegan that I want to try it myself. However, I am a big fan of egg / cheese / milk. I have been drinking soy milk for about 2 years, but not strictly.
I think I can ease into removing the dairy products, but how about all the delicious things, like cupcakes.. or cookies.. or chocolate! I know its great for the environment & my body and I really want to give it a chance. But when I think about all the little things that come with traces of dairy products.. its overwhelming.
Any tips on how I can ease into it without going into fatty-food withdrawal? :P Also, what vitamins should I pick up as supplements for what I’ll miss. I know you can get all vitamins through a well planned diet, but I’d rather be on the safe side and just get some supplements in case.
Thanks everyone.

I was a vegetarian for only about a week. That’s how little it took me to realize how terrible it was for me to be stealing eggs and milk from animals, and sponsoring the cruel industries that don’t give a care about the well being of our fellow earthlings.
I’m not an advocate of daily supplements, I would tell you to eat real wholesome food.
The first thing you want to do is get rid of milk. It’s the easiest to replace. Find a fortified soy/almond/nut milk you like and stick with it. Alternate if you wish. Be sure it is fortified with B12, as that is the only vitamin we vegans don’t naturally get in our diets –anymore. If you are into desserts (I am not), then why not find recipes for vegan cookies, cupcakes, muffins.. they are everywhere. I know cheese might be difficult for you to give away, but just remember that dairy is the culprit for a number of diseases and cancers.

HELP! Vegan substitute for soy yogurt?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by KOALA!: HELP! Vegan substitute for soy yogurt?
I’m making cupcakes and I don’t have any soy yogurt; the recipe needs 1/2 of it. What can I use (and how much of it) instead (that would still be vegan)?
I can’t go to the store, it’s closed for the night, and I can’t go tomorrow. I’ve already started making them (yogurt the ONLY thing I haven’t put in) b/c I thought I had soy yogurt, but apparently someone threw it out. I’m not sure what it does in the recipe but I don’t think soy milk by itself would work b/c it’s a liquid…not the right consistency…. :(
I checked and I have vegan sour cream, soy creamer, and egg replacer. Would any of those be of help? Or something like canola oil? I’m afraid of what the taste would be though…I’m making chai tea cupcakes, and the recipe wanted vanilla or plain soy yogurt.
Best answer:
Answer by Frosty
What is the soy yogurt doing to the recipe? If it’s there to hold everything together, you could try using egg replacer…
Crap, I wish I could help more.
Do you have any silken tofu? You could blend it until it gets whipped and try that.

I want to become vegan, but it’s really hard?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by Missy: I want to become vegan, but it’s really hard?
I’m a vegetarian right now, and find it extremely easy (even though my mom isn’t that keen on it). I hope I can become a vegan someday, and I’ve tried to find some good alternatives to dairy products, but I’m finding it extremely hard. The only real grocery store we have is our Super Walmart. :\ When I went shopping the other day to look for some vegan alternatives, I couldn’t find anything at all. Maybe I accidentally skipped over something, but as far as I know, there weren’t any visible alternatives.
Now, I’ve just kind of realized that I hate the taste of milk anyway. So, it won’t be that hard to cut it out of my diet. I suppose oatmeal would taste fine without the milk, but I’m not sure what I’ll put in my cereal. Water tastes disgusting when I tried putting it in a bowl of cereal. Also, what kind of dairy-free ice cream alternatives are there, because I love ice cream?
Cheese is something I would find REALLY hard to cut out of my diet. I have cheese almost every day… Pizza, pasta, etc… Plus, I’m from Wisconsin. We LOVE our cheese. :(
I do have some health problems (such as anemia…) that require me to eat eggs, but if I could find a healthy alternative, I’m all for that. I don’t mean something that tastes like an egg. I’m just talking about something that has the same health benefits…
If you could offer me up some advice, I’d appreciate it. I don’t want to rush myself into becoming vegan. I want to make sure once I become vegan, I won’t go back. I love being vegetarian, but I guess just because dairy products aren’t killing the animals, they end up getting killed anyway… I guess ‘cage free’ eggs aren’t much better than the normal eggs. Unless I had my own chickens, I don’t think I would be able to get eggs from chickens that weren’t harmed somehow. :( That’s sad.
P.S.- Since cakes and cupcakes are usually made with eggs and milk, do you have any suggestions on how to veganize them? I’ve heard there’s some books out there, but I haven’t checked them out yet. What about french toast? Is there a way to make it without eggs?
Sorry for all the questions. I just need some help…

Answer by Oleg Yazvin
Soy Ice cream is sold everywhere and tastes almost as good as real ice cream, as far as Eggs, go, you need iron if you have anemia. Supplements can take care of that. Also, eat lots and lots of corn. Corn is getting genetically engineered to be healthier each day, so that’s something you definitely want to keep in your diet. As far as cakes and cupcakes go, use margarine instead of milk and you’ll be fine. Instead of eggs use a different thickening agent like, perhaps, maple syrup or chocolate syrup.
Honestly, being a vegan isn’t easy, and unless you’re EXTREMELY diligent about supplying yourself with nutrients, it will be detrimental to your health. On average, vegetarians have higher lifespans than meat-eaters, but vegans have a lower one. Be sure you’re positive you want to go vegan before you do it.

How would I find going vegan? I’ve been vegetarian for 18 years now.?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by greenbean: How would I find going vegan? I’ve been vegetarian for 18 years now.?
What I currently eat (in general)- Beans/pulses/lentils/chick peas etc, vegetables (obviously!), seeds and nuts, grains (inc pasta, couscous etc) of any description, fruit, eggs (free range), cheese (not much though, I eat mostly cottage cheese, I think full fat hard cheeses should be considered a treat rather than an everyday thing, same as things like cupcakes or a sticky toffee pudding with custard), I have milk in tea and on cereal. Other than that the usual crisps/chocolate/cookies/crap etc (always vegetarian) that we should all eat less of. I eat tofu but only occasionally plain tofu because tbh I just don’t like it much, but I do like tofu rosso and the herb marinated ones. Loads of olives and stuff like that. Loads of cereals, especially oats and rye (yum). Yoghurt.
What I won’t eat- any form of ‘fake’ meat like vegetarian chicken (I just don’t get that at all- why would you decide to exclude animal products just to eat mock ones instead?? I don’t see the logic and it’s unnecessary when there are so many ‘real’ natural foods that I can eat instead. Besides which, I have tried them and they’re dry and salty and taste weird) or quorn mince etc. Quinoa- it’s just weird and that little tail thing that comes out turns my stomach for some weird reason. Avocado- hate it, just totally hate it. Okra. Aubergine. And, obviously, fish and anything meat or meat-related (gelatine, cochineal etc).
I’d have to give up my Saturday morning fried egg sandwich but mushrooms on toast would be fine instead, and change to soya/oat milk in tea and cereal, and switch to plain chocolate rather than milk. I’m not a massive ice-cream fan, I’d rather have sorbet anyway so that would be ok, and cut out cookies and cupcakes etc (unless i could get vegan ones) but that’s no bad thing. What other changes would I need to make? Is there anything that’s in a lot of stuff that I’ve completely missed or wouldn’t necessarily think of (I’m thinking of more obscure ingredients or processes, along the lines of isinglass used to clear drinks, that sort of thing, that you wouldn’t even think about if you weren’t vege or vegan already). Is it best to do it gradually, or should I just change overnight (seems a bit unnecessary to me to drag it out but I could be wrong)? My favourite, favourite meal in the world is a jacket potato with cottage cheese and loads of salad- what could I have as an alternative to that, for example? I don’t miss meat at all- I never have done, but sometimes I really want fish but I usually just have some linseed instead (my logic is I’m wanting some omega 3). Do I sound like I’d find it difficult, or would it just be a natural progression from how I eat already? Any other advice about anything related would be great too. Thanks x
I also don’t wear or buy leather, fur or feathers or products tested on animals.

You’d be a great vegan because you actually care. I thought going vegan was going to be impossible but now i wouldn’t’ trade it for anything.
http://www.vegweb.com gives you vegan recipies for almost everything!
i missed eggs at first but you get over it. i changed to vegan over night and went crazy finding cheese recipies etc.
all you have to do nowadays is google things and a bajillion options will open up. give it a thirty day trial and then ake up your mind:)
heres a report i wrote about veganism
Before I start my report, I’d like to say that this paper was not written to try and convert anyone to veganism. It’s just out there to clarify that veganism isn’t just for fools who want to have a label, it’s for people who are aware of the terrors put upon animals, and are protesting by not supporting companies that administer these attacks, on animals.
When I tell people that I want to be vegan, they usually look at me like I’m crazy and ask: “why?” In my mind, though, the real question is: ‘why not’. Humans don’t depend on milk from cows, just as we don’t drink milk from our mothers anymore. We don’t need to eat eggs when we can get all 8 essential amino acids from soy products. Then the people go on to say: “God that’s so stupid, we were meant to eat meat.” And I just stand there shaking my head trying to find the best way to tell them that we are NOT CARNIVORES!! Before saying: “fine, suit yourself”
My outlook on this topic is that… we don’t need meat; we eat it for our own pleasure. But, in my opinion, skinning, killing, and disemboweling an animal, before cutting it up into little bite size pieces and frying them as chicken nuggets is a high cost for some ‘good food’.
Dairy and Eggs: most people will accept vegetarians and there ways of thinking, but when they hear the word ‘vegan’ they think of crazy lunatics who have taken a step too far in the wacko direction… but that’s not really the case. Most cows in the dairy industry are given growth hormones that cause their udders to become unnaturally big and heavy, to produce more milk. This process increases the birth defects in cows. The average dairy cow will produce about 100 pounds of milk per day, 10 times more than it would naturally produce. Normal non-milked cows can live an average of 25 years. Dairy cows are slaughtered and made into beef after about 3-4 years. Because of the intense abuse they’ve gone through at the milking farm dairy cows also often end up not being able to stand or walk which causes the cows to become even more injured from humans dragging them into trucks to move them. When people hear of the abuse cows go through at many farms, some switch to organic milk, where cows are treated with better respect. But even organic farms have to make money; they will still inject hormones into the cow, keep it pregnant, and in a few years… ship it off to the slaughterhouse.
Male chicks are considered useless in the egg-laying business, so after birth, they are all either thrown into a big box, or plastic bags and thrown away. Soft eggs are also considered useless in this career. Eggs need to be hard and firm to survive truck rides to grocery stores, but after a year of laying eggs, the chickens eggs start to loose there firmness. For this reason, egg-lying chickens are slaughtered about one year after births… yes even the “free range” chickens.
So every time I hear my friends calling me crazy for going vegan, or my dad telling me to stop fretting over the small amounts of dairy in each product we buy… I think of those poor cows and chickens, and what I can do to make a difference.

People who raised their kids vegan?
|
Vegan Cupcakes |
Question by MusicaDeLaNoche: People who raised their kids vegan?
OK, first of all, please don’t tell me it’s stupid or unhealthy. I’ve done a lot of research on the pros and cons, the reasons, the concerns and benedits, of a vegan diet and lifestyle. If I become pregnant, I plan on seeing a R.D. to ensure I’m getting everything. I’ve been vegan a while now, continue to run cross-country and distance track, and feel healthier than ever- so don’t tell me what to do. Ok? Thanks.
So, when I have kids, I definitely plan on raising them vegan. I have a couple questions for vegan parents
-what do you do for halloween?
-what do you do when your child’s invited to birthday parties?
For halloween, I think I’ll host a big Halloween party with vegan candies, bat cookies, pumpkins, cupcakes, etc, every year with my kids so they don’t feel totally left out.
For birthday parties, do you just pack a lunch? I’m assuming you contact the host beforehand, how do they usually react?
OK, thanks for any help :)

awesome question! i recently became vegan and thought about this if my children were younger. i suppose it would be difficult to raise them vegan because of outside influences.
A halloween party is a great idea…..!! as for birthday parties and such i am not sure. we do not ever want our kids to feel left out and even bringing something different to eat might mae them feel that way. pizza is always ordered at parties.
i admire you greatly and wish you the best of luck. Our children are born vegan, it is society that changes us. instill children with compassion for all creatures.
my children are teens and they have no choice about what i buy for them to eat. funny thing is they dont complain and my son still thinks i eat chicken becasue the vegan meals i buy taste good enough. :) they drink the soy millk with no problem and their freinds even like my food.lol
My son calls it friendly food and his freinds ask if it is freindly food they eat.
